THE Pacific churches have called for the postponement of this week’s CSW64 and Beijing+25 talks to allow women to participate without travel restrictions forced by the Corona Virus.

In a letter to the UN Women Pacific Representative, Sandra Bernklau, PCC General Secretary, Reverend James Bhagwan, said the Pacific must be represented at the New York talks.

He appealed for a postponement so that all women could participate freely in this important forum.

Here is his letter:

Warm greetings from the Pacific Conference of Churches Secretariat!

The Pacific Conference of Churches supports the call for postponement of the CSW64 and Beijing +25 talks at the United Nations.

Pacific women’s groups and Pacific representatives of global bodies, such as the World Council of Churches will be unable to attend these important discussions because of restrictions and safety precautions around COVID19 (the Coronavirus).

We call for CSW64 andBeijing+25 to be moved to July 27 when the UN General Assembly is scheduled tohold multi-stakeholder discussions on the issue. These discussions affect women worldwide and the Pacific must be allowed to participate.

We believe the UN should take into consideration that the COVID19 alerts will seriously affect travel for women and their ability to participate effectively in these crucial talks.

In the name of fairness and justice we pray for understanding and goodwill from the UN.

With prayers for those affected by COVID10 personally or due to travel restrictions and for your team here in the Pacific as well as in New York.

Reverend JAMES S. BHAGWAN
General Secretary
