THE World Council of Churches Ecumenical Water Network pre-launched a seven-week campaign in Suva, Fiji last month.
Participants in the WCC’s Pilgrimage for Justice and Peace took part in the launch at the Nawanawa Methodist Church.
While the Seven Weeks of Water begin officially on Ash Wednesday (February 26), Fiji was chosen as the pre-launch site because of the presence of CC representatives from around the world.
Ash Wednesday is the beginning of Len, traditionally a time to prepare for the celebration of the death and resurrection of Christ.
During this period many people engage in fasting and practice moderation or self-denial in order to focus on repentance and consecrating oneself to God.
While water has a strong spiritual significance in the Christian tradition as a gift of God, this scarce resource is threatened and denied to billions around the world.
The Fiji launch was supported by its national council of churches and the Pacific Conference of Churches.
