THE World Council of Churches Ecumenical Water Network pre-launched a seven-week campaign in Suva, Fiji last month.<\/p>\n
Participants in the WCC’s Pilgrimage for Justice and Peace took part in the launch at the Nawanawa Methodist Church.<\/p>\n
While the Seven Weeks of Water begin officially on Ash Wednesday (February 26), Fiji was chosen as the pre-launch site because of the presence of CC representatives from around the world.<\/p>\n
Ash Wednesday is the beginning of Len, traditionally a time to prepare for the celebration of the death and resurrection of Christ. <\/p>\n
During this period many people engage in fasting and practice moderation or self-denial in order to focus on repentance and consecrating oneself to God. <\/p>\n
While water has a strong spiritual significance in the Christian tradition as a gift of God, this scarce resource is threatened and denied to billions around the world.<\/p>\n
The Fiji launch was supported by its national council of churches and the Pacific Conference of Churches.<\/p>\n
